Suicide is ones intentional decision to end ones take life and is usually a solitary act (Heath 1). It is a grave act, usually resorted to when all else is lost. Suicide has become the eleventh leading cause of death in America and on average, one self-annihilation occurs every seventeen minutes. However, many individuals that generate suicide may lack a key section in a healthy and prosperous life- friendly relationship. In his novel, A Long Way Down, Nick Hornby satirically explores the epidemic of suicide through four unique individuals. Their union in friendship temporarily abates the dilemmas that occur in each one of their lives. They crack up to give in to living for another six weeks, and to attend each other stay alive through that time. The characters perform as examples of the benefits of taking a second chance on life and the power of a bond that friendship creates. Martin, Maureen, Jess, and JJ adopt a set of circumstances that life presents to them and defeat the odious pain with the company and guidance of each other. In A Long Way Down, Nick Hornby exposes the usefulness of friendship, which can be used as a tool through hardships in life.

Before making the mistake of sleeping with a fifteen-year-old girl, Martin had a wife and two daughters, a well-paid job as a TV show host, and had a positive outlook on life. He jeopardized all his hard work, and therefore met the full cuff of his consequences. After going to court and spending time in prison, Martin discovers that his marriage has been ruined and his life has turned completely around.
