The speaker is not necessarily in a depressed or unhappy-with-his-present-situation mood at the end of the poem. He may only be sighing because he is aware(p) of the complexity of life, the short span of life, and the fact that one traveller can never walk down more than one road at the same time. We may sigh over the fact that not entering World War II would have saved thousands of lives, but this does not train us regret choosing to enter it and possibly saving ten multiplication that number in the long run. However, each choice we make defines us and each choice we make negates the possibility of another choice. In that instant of the present choosing we mold our future being, perhaps years before we ever develop into the end fruit of the choice.
However, we must argue that the speaker seems to believe that taking "the one less traveled by,/?has made all the difference." The speaker appears to be content with the choice he made years wherefore in the woods, because if he were not he would not speculate that taking the path he took has made all the difference. He might not be saying he is deliriously content or happy with his choice, but is has made all the difference. In this sense, the speaker is urging readers to understand that it is often not the well traveled road (or the typically taken choices) that modify us to develop to our fullest capabilities. Perhaps we need to make the furrowed choices, or at least the rarer ones, in order to make a difference in our lives. In fact, in stanza two, the speaker relays that he took the path he did because though it the other path was just as fair, the one he took "[had] perhaps the breach claim,/Because it was grassy and wanted wear."
