Sir John A. Macdonald has a prominent straddle in our history. He was a successful lawyer from minuscule beginnings; a husband whose two marriages were marred by person-to-person tragedies; a backroom politician repeatedly linked to scandals, and a sharp party leader whose contribution to his country was incalculable.
