Sir John A. Macdonald has a prominent straddle in our history. He was a successful lawyer from minuscule beginnings; a husband whose two marriages were marred by person-to-person tragedies; a backroom politician repeatedly linked to scandals, and a sharp party leader whose contribution to his country was incalculable. John A. Macdonald caused contestation with his actions during The Pacific Scandal, Northwest Rebellion and The National Policy.
After practically conflict, Canada had won the race with the United States for the lands in the West, and Macdonald knew that Canada had to work arduous to hold the West. He decided to build a rail line line to connect all the provinces from eastern Canada to British Columbia. Macdonald wanted a group of Canadian businessmen to build the railway, and both a Toronto-based firm and a Montreal-based firm were fighting for the job. Macdonald had used this money in the election and had not taken the money for himself, but the people felt that the visor Minister and the Conservatives owed so much money to Allan that they had to give him the railway job.
