Reflection is associated with learning from experience; stimulating personal and pro growth linking theory to practice (Burns and Bulman 2000). Engaging in ruminative practice encourages improvements in quality of care ( whitehead and Mason 2005). By analysing past experiences to promote learning, and improve performance Clouder (2000) stated is a way of nurses keeping their knowledge updated; a requirement of the nurse and Midwifery Council (NMC 2008). The focus of this essay is to reflect upon personal learning gained when exploring the importance of reducing anxiety in essay one. The Gibbs reflective cycle has been chosen as a framework for saying (Gibbs, 1988 Cited in Heath and Taylor 2002 p395) (Appendix 1). The model will be utilise throughout the essay to facilitate critical thought, acknowledge capabilities and concenter upon personal and professional development for continued improvements.
The initial stages of the Gibbs (1988) framework require a description of the situation and analysis of feelings. The generalisation for exploring anxiety was an encounter with an anxious patient (appendix 2). The experience go forth me feeling uncomfortable and inadequate in my role. I attempt to understand why the patient had reacted so alarmingly by putting myself in her position. I felt frustrated, but much importantly an enormous feeling of helplessness. These feelings where perhaps the reasons for my desire to explore further the topic of anxiety, so as to be more than effective in my future practice. Additionally, although this experience was very stimulate for me and frustrating for the patient, it has highlighted the need for me to improve my communication skills.
