Brashly panoramic in the candy-colored style of a childrens invoice book, the newest film incarnation of Rudyard Kiplings Jungle Book is a video that is absolutely clear in what it wants to say. There was the 1942 film, starring Sabu, and the 1967 Disney animated classic, in which Mowglis animal companions assumed cartoon personalities. In this new live-action interpretation, also by Disney, the animals dont talk. Based only loosely on Kipling and directed by Stephen Sommers, who wrote the screenplay with Ronald Yanover and Mark D. Geldman, it is a chaste teen-age love story with an ecologic sensibility and some terrific scenery.
In this version, Mowgli decides to rejoin cultivation to be close to Kitty, his childhood playmate from the time he was lost in the jungle and presumed dead.
