Louis Riel was a Canadian politician. He was the founder of Manitoba. He was a leader of the Métis of the Canadian prairies. Louis David Riel was born at Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, on Oct. 23, 1844, of Métis parents. Louis Riels parents were Julie Lagimodiere and Jean-Louis Riel. His quickness of mind was early accept by the priests at Saint-Boniface, and Riel was sent east to study at the Seminaire de St-Sulpice in Montreal when he was fourteen. During his time there he became present with the revolutionary political ideas of Louis Joseph Papineau. While he was there he had missed his family and community dearly. He was brought up in a highly religious Roman Catholic atmosphere imbued with saints, sacraments, prayers and priests. Riel distinct not to become a priest, however, and he returned to the Red River area. In 1864 his father had passed on. When he was 21, he completed his education in Montreal.
