Progressivism

The Progressive era gave rise to significant changes to the nations economic, political, and social sectors. Progressives were both men and women from different ethnic throngs, classifyes and occupations who challenged tralatitious attitudes about the American way of life. They fought to overcome problems in government, deject political machines and inadequate living conditions of the poor. Many progressive-minded associations formed throughout the United States to raise concern for issues and to put pressure on business and government leaders to focus on the problems. Progressivism attracted set and lower class Americans who felt helpless against industrial giants manage Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, whose increasing power influenced politicians and the laws and regulations they approved. Some upper-class business community and wealthy women supported some government regulation and political reconstructing to protect their interests. Young middle-class men and women worked together to duad the gap between social classes by living in settlement houses. Settlement houses were places where people could take the edge of sophisticated problems through education, art, and reform. Progressive views were expressed by journalists that attacked the rich in books and articles that accused them of corruption.



These writers believed that once the government and big businesses were reformed, leaders would be able to focus their efforts on protecting the weaker members of society, such as women, children, the sick, and the poor. Theodore Roosevelt labeled these journalists who exposed offensive and immoral behavior as muckrakers. The muckrakers brought issues to the publics attention so that action could be taken to reform the problems.
As Progressives fought to change America, a group of Protestant ministers organized the Social Gospel movement to affect religious ethics into the business world.
